Before you book

Is this the right visit for you?

This practice focuses on urologic cancers, and on finding out whether a worrying test result may be cancer. A few minutes here may help you reach the right clinic the first time and arrive with the records your care team will need.

Who this practice is for

Urologic cancers, known or suspected.

Dr. Khandekar is a urologic oncologist. Most patients come with a cancer diagnosis, or with a test result that needs a closer look.

Not yet diagnosed

If one of these has been found, an evaluation may help clarify whether cancer is present and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

What is not seen here

Some conditions belong in another clinic.

These conditions are common and important, and they are usually best cared for in a general urology clinic rather than a cancer practice.

  • Enlarged prostate (BPH) and urinary symptoms without a cancer concern
  • Kidney stones
  • Interstitial cystitis and bladder pain
  • Other general urology concerns, such as recurring urinary infections or incontinence

UHealth urology has colleagues who care for these conditions. When you contact UHealth scheduling, describe your concern and the team can direct you to the right clinic.

Not sure where your situation fits? It is a reasonable question to ask when you call. (305) 243-6090

Referrals

Do you need a referral?

  • Self-referral is possible

You can request an appointment through UHealth scheduling, online or by phone, without a letter from another doctor.

  • A referral still helps

A referral from your primary care doctor or urologist usually brings your records, results and the question being asked, which can make the first visit more useful.

  • Check your plan

Some insurance plans may require a referral or prior approval before a specialist visit. Your plan can tell you whether yours does.

Insurance

Coverage is checked when you schedule.

This site does not list insurance plans, because plan participation can change. UHealth verifies coverage when your appointment is scheduled. Please have your insurance card ready when you book, and contact your plan directly with questions about your own benefits.

Records to gather

What to bring or send ahead.

Records from other doctors let the visit focus on decisions rather than repeating tests. Bring what you can; the team can help request the rest.

The day-of-visit checklist, clinic locations and first-visit steps are on the New Patients page.

  • Pathology report from any biopsy or surgery
  • Imaging on disc (CT, MRI, PET or ultrasound), or access to the portal where the images are stored, with the written reports
  • PSA history with dates, or tumor marker results if they were checked
  • A current medication list, including blood thinners and supplements
  • Operative notes from any previous urologic or abdominal surgery
  • Your questions, written down

Patients outside South Florida

Coming from farther away?

  • Records can be sent ahead of the visit. Ask the scheduling team how and where to send them.
  • Ask the scheduling team whether a video visit may be appropriate for your situation. This depends on several factors, including whether an examination or tests are needed in person.
  • Some tests and treatments require one or more trips to Miami. Your care team can help you plan around that.
